Campus History
Vernon Middle School World Languages Academy honors Julia Vernon, a beloved English teacher and librarian who dedicated her career to Harlingen students from the 1920s onwards. The campus building is historic in its own right; originally constructed in 1929 as Harlingen High School and designed by architect Roscoe Dewitt, it was known as 'The Showplace of the Valley.' It transitioned to a middle school in 1958 and was named in Mrs. Vernon's honor in 1963. In 2019, the campus was reimagined as a World Languages Academy, adding a global dimension to its rich history.
