My favorite thing about

coming here at Vernon

is the diversity and

everything that they just

add into their lessons.

Like, for example, all

the teachers, they're very

welcoming and the way

that they explain things

really helps for everyone

to understand because

different children have

different ways of

understanding. And all the

teachers are very aware

of that and they

make sure that they

add that into their

lessons. I think what

it means for a

school to be an

IB school is that

we are given a

really great framework that

we can fit our

curriculum in that helps

the students to make

connections between all of

their classes and to

their lives and the

world in which they

live. We try to

show our students and

have them think it

through and reflect. How

does this connect to

what I'm learning in

my science class? And

how does this connect

to what I'm seeing

in my community and

what I'm seeing on

TikTok about the world?

So having access to

these various languages

allows them to become

bilingual, trilingual and,

you know, no. And

they also get a

high school credit as

well. So. And it

connects with now what

we're becoming an IB

school. I believe that

students should see what

is going on around

the world and connected

to what they are

currently learning in school.

Because sometimes I feel

like they just see

what's in front of

them and they don't

understand that this is

something that happens

globally. I think it's

important that Vernon is

becoming an IB school

because we need a

school here in Harlingen

that anybody can come

to that is open

to the world and

so they can learn

more about things that

are happening outside of

Harlingen and just anywhere

else. I love working

with the other teachers

and the collaboration that

we have. If I

don't have the answers,

they do. We're kind

of like a tight

knit community. I rely

on them a lot,

but also because of

the students. Like, I

love teaching them, I

love having them learn.

Kind of like understanding

that it's not just

Harlingen. And yes, Harlingen

is amazing, but what

else can I do

outside of Harlingen?

Campus History

Vernon Middle School World Languages Academy honors Julia Vernon, a beloved English teacher and librarian who dedicated her career to Harlingen students from the 1920s onwards. The campus building is historic in its own right; originally constructed in 1929 as Harlingen High School and designed by architect Roscoe Dewitt, it was known as 'The Showplace of the Valley.' It transitioned to a middle school in 1958 and was named in Mrs. Vernon's honor in 1963. In 2019, the campus was reimagined as a World Languages Academy, adding a global dimension to its rich history.
