The Vela Jazz Band has been recognized as the Best in the State by the Texas Music Educators Association multiple times. The campus offers 25 student clubs and organizations including FTC Robotics, E-Sports, National Junior Honor Society, and Speech, Drama and Debate. With a 1:1 device-to-student ratio and strong fine arts programs, students have every opportunity to discover their passions and excel. Panthers take pride in their consistent excellence, earning an A rating from the Texas Education Agency for 2024-2025. The school has claimed UIL District Champion titles multiple years running, and students have achieved national recognition in Speech and Debate competitions. Campus History
Moises V. Vela Middle School proudly honors Judge Moises Vicente Vela Sr., a trailblazing civic leader who served as Cameron County Judge and dedicated over 50 years to public service. Opening its doors in August 2005, the school was established to serve the growing Harlingen community and to recognize Judge Vela's belief that education is the true equalizer in life. Since its founding, the campus has maintained a tradition of academic excellence and community engagement, growing into a cornerstone of HCISD's educational mission.
