Why Choose Ben Milam Elementary?

Ben Milam Elementary serves as HCISD's distinguished Dual Language Academy, implementing an innovative educational approach where native English and Spanish speakers learn together, progressively mastering both languages through integrated curriculum. Since launching Pre-K through 2nd grade dual language instruction in 2014-2015, the program has expanded annually so students who started in Pre-K will graduate fifth grade fully bilingual. The campus features 21st century digital classrooms and a fully equipped Information Literacy Center. Ben Milam Elementary earned an 'A' rating from the Texas Education Agency for 2024-2025, with exemplary grades in School Progress (A) and Closing the Gaps (A). The Mighty Mustangs maintain a 93.57% attendance rate and strong community engagement. Recent honors include teachers recognized by Walmart for their efforts and the school nurse named HCISD Nurse of the Year. The campus motto 'Educating Future Leaders' reflects their commitment to student success.

Campus History

Ben Milam Elementary honors Benjamin Rush Milam (1788-1835), a Kentucky-born Texas revolutionary hero whose courageous leadership at the Siege of Bexar proved pivotal in Texas history. The campus traces its origins to a Farm Security Administration labor camp established on Rangerville Road in the late 1930s, which included a wooden auditorium used as a school facility. Ben Milam Elementary School was erected in the 1960s, utilizing that auditorium until it was lost to fire. A significant addition in 1992 brought the current front office and library, and the campus was designated a Dual Language Academy in 2014-2015.
