Campus History
Gutierrez Middle School is named after Second Lieutenant George Gutierrez Jr., a Harlingen High School football star and the first casualty of the Vietnam War from Harlingen. Lt. Gutierrez, a Texas A&M graduate and helicopter pilot, died in 1965 near Saigon and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The campus was built and opened to students in grades 6-8 during the 1996-1997 school year. In 2019, the district transformed the campus into an Arts and Sciences academy, partnering with Discovery Education to integrate specialized pathways in visual arts, dance, music, theatre, and science.
