Campus History
Bonham Elementary honors James Butler Bonham, a courageous defender of the Alamo who gave his life for Texas independence on March 6, 1836. Founded in September 1948 as Colonial Acres Elementary at the Harlingen Air Base (now Marine Military Academy), the school initially consisted of only two buildings. In November 1953, students and staff moved to the current location at 2400 E. Jefferson Avenue. Following the move, sixth-grade students researched Texas heroes and, through a popular vote, selected the name Bonham after a classmate's report on the Alamo defender. The campus has since grown from two buildings to serve over 500 students.
