Campus History
Austin Elementary honors Stephen Fuller Austin (1793-1836), the 'Father of Texas' who led the colonization of the region in the early 19th century. Austin has deep roots in Harlingen, originally established as a neighborhood school on Austin Street. In 1936, the campus was renamed in honor of Stephen F. Austin to celebrate the Texas Centennial. The school underwent a significant transformation when it began its candidacy to become an International Baccalaureate school in 2018. After two years of preparation, Austin Elementary was officially authorized as an IB World School on December 2, 2020.
